Bunny Burrow Rescue's aim is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome sick, dumped, injured, and homeless bunnies.

There are so many bunnies in South Africa who need homes because of irresponsible breeding. Pet shops contribute to this irresponsibleness seeing as they support breeders and often misgender the bunnies which lead to more problems. Rescues all over South Africa are under a lot of strain because of this issue and funds aren't always readily available for vet bills and sterilizations.

We sterilize all bunnies who pass through our rescue so that breeding doesn't happen.

This is why Usagi & Me was created; to help the bunnies who pass through our rescue so that they are healthy and ready to be rehomed to a loving family.

  • Most of our bunnies at the rescue are free-roam. This means they are not in any enclosures and have full access to the garden at all times.

  • We have different sections at the rescue to seperate certain bunnies from the rest. This could be due to some buns not getting along, buns in quarintine or new bunnies.

  • We have many bunnies needing wonderful and loving homes. Pop in any time to come visit them, read them a book, sing to them, or enjoy a cup of tea while you watch them play.

Virtual Adoptions

Sometimes things prevent us from having pets. Maybe your landlord doesn't allow pets, you're allergic, you don't have enough space, or you just don't have the time to care for a pet.

Why not consider virtually adopting a bunny?!

By virtually adopting a bunny you will get monthly email photo updates with write-ups on how your little furry friend is doing and they will be messaging you from their perspective! Or from ours, whatever you prefer ;)

By adopting one of our rescues you will be supporting them financially for R150 per month. This will cover their food, toys, blankies, grooming and anything else they might need.

*Please note that we will never ask you to cover any medical costs for them. This is just day-to-day care.

  • Madeline

Madeline was found at an abandoned factory where her and her two siblings were being bred for meat. We received a call to say that her siblings had been rescued but because Madeline is blind nobody wanted to deal with a disabled bunny. We took her in without a split second of hesitation and saw how lovely and calm her demeanor was. We instantly fell in love with her and decided to make her a permanent resident at the rescue. She is now safe from a horrible fate and she is living her best bunny life!

  • Officer Judy Hopps

Officer Judy Hopps at your service! Judy is our resident security bunny. She always alerts the other buns when danger arises by thumping her hind legs. Well, danger as in when the wind blows and the leaves rustle. But it still counts! Good job, Judy!

  • Heidi

Heidi's name was originally Blossom. She escaped from her pen and sent us all into the biggest panic of our life! We even offered a reward if someone found her. She had somehow managed to hop into the main house and hide under the TV cabinet and we found her 2 hours later. We then named her Heidi because she mastered the art of hiding when she was just a baby!

  • Odin

Odin is a mischievous little dwarf bunny who loves attention and head rubs! He thinks he runs the rescue but in actual fact he runs the main house because he loves being inside too much. He claimed the couch so now nobody is allowed to sit on it except him! He is best friends with Biscuit and always falls in love with the chonky girl buns. He's a little Casanova!

  • Harry Hopper

Harry claims all the pot plants around the rescue and he even climbs trees! We should actually rename him Harry TreeHopper. He is a very chilled bun and likes to take long naps in the sun. He's a chonky little boy but that just means there's more of him to love!

  • Osaka

Osaka is such a sweet little boy! This cutie was found wandering the streets of Bellville all alone and lost. His fur was extremely matted and it took us nearly 6 hours to get everything out! He is very welcoming to any bun who comes into the rescue and always makes them feel welcome and at home.

  • Tofu

Tofu is the big brother figure at the rescue. He is also the brother of Clara! Tofu is an extremely kindhearted bunny who loves to protect the buns who don’t get accepted by the other bunnies at the rescue. He lives at the back of the rescue wherewe keep all the bunnies who need a bit more TLC. He treats them with lots of love and care and he helps the buns with social anxiety overcome their fears. He’s very protective over his sister and over our blind bunny, Madeline. When it’s dinner time he patiently waits for them to eat first before he eats.

  • Wab Wab

Wab Wab is the biggest bunny at the rescue! She’s a Flemish Giant so that means she is HUGE! She is more than double the size of all the other buns. Her previous owner loves her with all his heart but unfortunately had to find her a new home until he can find himself a pet-friendly apartment. He still comes to visit her all the time and brings her treats!

  • Allison

Allison came to us as in a horrible state. She grew up in a small cupboard her whole life, yes, a cupboard! We were so heartbroken to hear that. She was extremely wild and would try to bite us whenever we gave her food or go near her. We spent a lot of time with her and we showed her what love is and she became such a sweet bunny. She's a dwarf bunny so that means she's going to stay small. She doesn't bite anymore and she loves head rubs!

  • Ollivander

Ollivander, or Ollie for short is the sweetest bun bun ever. He runs straight up to us whenever we come home or when it is dinner time! He was dumped by UCT and ran straight up to us when we went to go rescue him. His bestie's name is Cora and they do everything together. They often groom each other and hang out together under the garden table and chairs just watching the bunch of buns (and maybe silently judging them)

  • Snowbell

Snowbell is one of our fluffiest bunnies at the rescue. He often needs to get haircuts so that his fur doesn’t turn into dreads! Him and his brother Benji have a love-hate relationship and you can often find them chasing each other all around the rescue or giving each other lots of kisses!

  • Opal

Opal was found in a swampland in Durbanville. She came to us while pregnant so we were very surprised when she gave birth! She has the most beautiful personality we have ever seen in a bunny. She always wants to be around us and we spend hours on end giving her head rubs. She is a permanent resident at the rescue and she has a boyfriend named Slinky. They spend all their time together and they are inseparable. Opal is a real beauty queen. Look at those gorgeous eyelashes! She is such a lady.
